Boskop Dam outside Potchefstroom, 14-15 December 2013

We met up with some friends at Boskop dam. When we got there, our friends were already fishing(trying to fish). There are a lot of water grass in the dam. This is ideal for bass angling and targeting tilapia which are quite abundant along the shore in the thick grass/reeds.

Needless to say, not a lot of catching of carp or barbel was done. We did have a great time braaiing and catching up with our friends and planning our next fishing trip.

I also had a chance to take some awesome photos as the place is home to lots of wild birds, animals and nature in general. Some pictures to follow.

The water is very clear!

Jaco must have caught hundreds of these... Kept him quite busy!

Koos with a very highly prized carp. Good work!

The moon kept watch over us.

Early morning just before sunrise.

Some local wild life early morning during sunrise.

Awesome to experience such a beautiful sunrise.

The view from my tent.

Bloemhof 20-24 September 2013

Bloemhof Nature Reserve 20-24 September

So three of us left for Bloemhof early on Friday 20 September heading to Sandveld. When we eventually reached Bloemhof at around 11.00am, we headed straight for the “Vetkoek” shop as we were quite hungry by then.  After picking up our food we headed to Sandveld. We soon realized that Sandveld would not be as accessible as we had hoped due to the fact that the water levels were at 35%.

Bloemhof Vetkoek. Need I say more...

Sandveld on our arrival

Nature Reserve side.
We decided to head into the Nature Reserve to see if there are not maybe more vehicle friendly spots that will still deliver fish. Eventually after almost in hours driving we selected a spot near the wooden cabins about 11km from the main gate.

We got a spot!

It was a cold day as there was an incoming cold-front, but this did not stop us from catching about 7 fish all together. Gideon and Cecile both had 3 and I ended the day with 1. The fish mostly got taken on Almond mielies at this stage.

Ready to fish...

More of our friends arrived later that evening. The wind was blowing quite hard and setting up big tents was not a good idea. We ended up our small tents as to not tempt the wind into blowing everything away.

In the meantime Koos started fishing like he always does and it wasn’t long before he had bait for targeting Catfish. First rods for catfish went in and it wasnt too long before there was some action.

The next day was even colder than the previous day. I did not fish as much as I wanted, but still some nice fish came out. Lots of carp in the 2-3kg range. We had lots of smaller fish too which we kept for bait for targeting catfish later on that evening.

Some more friends arrived during the Saturday and we all had an awesome long weekend.

The catsfish that came out were all caught on carp heads except one which was caught on grasscarp head. We only had 3 catfish below 10kg. The rest were all between 10-14kg.

Eventually we had to go home on Tuesday after all had a great time fishing and sitting around the fire at night and even having some deep discussions on thiings not fishing related.

Thanks to one and all. Hope to do it again as soon as we can get everyone together again in one place.

Roodeplaat Ntvl side 20 July 2013

Had an awesome day with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately did not catch any fish, but saw some nice fish coming out not far from us. Gota few pointers and will definitely be back with a new plan.As you can see from the pics, the dam is not at its fullest.
